Liebherr CBN models are bottom-freezer refrigerators with a BioFresh compartment and a NoFrost freezer, and the four digits at the end of the name tell you which size class and generation you are looking at. A CBNbda 5723 and a CBNsda 5753 are therefore related but not interchangeable: the digits differ, so the cabinet, the capacity and often the feature list differ too. The way to choose between them is to read the name, then compare a short list of rows on each data sheet.
What does CBN mean on a Liebherr refrigerator?
CBN is three separate facts packed into three capital letters. The first letter says the cabinet is a combination of a fridge on top and a freezer underneath. The B says a BioFresh compartment is built in, which is the drawer zone that runs colder than the main fridge and holds a controlled humidity level for meat, fish and produce. The N says the freezer defrosts itself with NoFrost instead of asking you to do it. Our Liebherr model number decoder walks through the full pattern, including the lowercase letters.
The useful point for a buyer is that CN and CBN are different appliances even though the names look almost identical. A CNsdd 5253 has no BioFresh drawers. A CBN does. If your shortlist mixes both, you are comparing a fridge with a conventional crisper against a fridge with a dedicated cold zone, and that is a larger difference than the extra letter suggests.
How do the 5223, 5723 and 5753 families differ?
The last four digits act as a size class and a generation marker. On the same family, a larger leading digit generally means a larger cabinet, and two models that share all four digits are usually the same body with different trim. That is why a CBNbda 5723 and a CBNbdc 5723 sit together, while the CBNsda 5753 and CBNbaa 5753 form a second pair. The CBNsdb 5223 and CBNsfd 5223 are a third group, and the CBNbsd 7661 and CBNstd 779i belong to a larger class again.
We deliberately do not quote widths and capacities here, because they change between production years and between finishes. Treat the digits as a way to sort the list into groups, then open the data sheet for the exact number you are considering. If a retailer lists a model by a name that does not match any group above, ask for the complete string from the rating plate. A model name that is shortened in a listing is the most common reason people receive a cabinet that is not quite the one they researched.
Which lowercase letters should you pay attention to?
The lowercase cluster, such as bda, sda, baa or sdb, describes the outside and the fittings. It is also the part Liebherr changes most often between generations, so do not try to memorize a single meaning for each letter. Treat the cluster as a label to quote. When two models of the same four-digit family differ only in this cluster, the practical differences are usually the door finish, the handle style and whether connectivity hardware is installed.
That last item is worth checking. A model with the SmartDevice module can send temperature and door alerts to a phone, and our SmartDeviceBox glossary explains what the module does and what it does not do. If you do not plan to use an app, the connected version gives you nothing you will miss, and the choice can come down to finish and price.

What should you compare on each data sheet?
Open the sheets side by side and compare these rows, in this order. First, the outer width, height and depth, because a cabinet that does not fit the opening ends the comparison. Second, the net capacity of the fresh section, the BioFresh drawers and the freezer, since two cabinets of similar size can divide the space very differently. Third, the number of freezer drawers and whether the top one is shallow. Fourth, the climate class and the sound level, which matter in a garage, a basement or an open-plan kitchen. Fifth, the door finish, and last, whether the unit is built for freestanding use or for integration behind a furniture panel.
Write the numbers down rather than relying on memory. Many buyers compare features first and dimensions last, then discover that the cabinet they like is a few inches too tall for the cabinet above it or too deep to let a door swing open fully.
Is a CBN the right choice over a freezer-on-top or a side-by-side?
A bottom freezer puts the compartment you open most often at eye level. That suits households that cook with fresh food and use the freezer for backup. The trade-off is bending down to a drawer, which is a small chore if you use frozen food daily. If you live on frozen meals, a side-by-side may suit you better, and our side-by-side guide explains that layout. If you are still deciding between a built-in look and a freestanding cabinet, read integrated vs freestanding fridge first, because that choice removes half of the models from your list.
What should you plan before the cabinet arrives?
Plan the path from the truck to the kitchen: door widths, hallway turns and any stairs. A full-height cabinet is heavy, and deliveries fail at a tight turn far more often than at the kitchen opening. Check that the floor is level and that the cabinet will have the ventilation clearance in the installation sheet at the sides, top and back. Check which way the door hinges and whether it can be reversed; our guide on reversing a Liebherr fridge door shows what that involves.
After delivery, let the cabinet stand upright for the time stated in the manual before you switch it on, then give it a full day to settle before loading food. Setting the compartment temperatures once and leaving them alone gives the control system a stable start, and our temperature settings guide lists sensible starting points.
What if you are buying because an older cabinet is failing?
If the cabinet you want to replace is only a few years old, ask first whether a single part is the cause. A fan, a door seal or a sensor can cost far less than a new bottom-freezer, while a failed sealed system on an old cabinet is usually where replacement wins. Our repair or replace guide for Liebherr fridges lays out the questions to ask, and a technician visit gives you a firm diagnosis rather than a guess.
