TL;DR: On a Liebherr data sheet, the climate class sets the room temperatures the cabinet can handle, the dB figure rates its noise, and net volume is the usable space. Read these before you buy or blame a part.

A Liebherr spec sheet is a page of abbreviations that decide how the refrigerator behaves in your house: the climate class sets the room temperature it is built for, the sound rating tells you how loud it will be in an open kitchen, and the net volume says how much food it really holds. This glossary of Liebherr spec sheet terms explains the terms you will meet on a Liebherr data sheet, what each one means in practice and which ones deserve a second look before you buy or before you call for service.

Climate classThe room temperature range the cabinet is designed to cool in: SN, N, ST or T
Sound level (dB)Noise rating in A-weighted decibels; a lower number is quieter
Net volumeUsable storage space, smaller than the outside dimensions suggest
Freezing capacityHow much fresh food the freezer can bring down to freezing temperature in 24 hours
Holdover timeHow long the freezer stays cold enough after a power failure
RefrigerantThe gas in the sealed system, often listed as R600a on Liebherr data sheets

What is a climate class on a Liebherr refrigerator?

A climate class is a rating of the room temperatures a cabinet is designed to work in. SN covers a cool room, roughly 50 to 90 degrees F. N covers about 61 to 90 degrees F. ST stretches that to about 100 degrees F, and T reaches about 109 degrees F. The compressor does not care about the label, but the cabinet does: a unit rated for a narrow range can struggle, run constantly and fail to reach its set temperature when the room sits outside that range.

This matters most for refrigerators placed in a garage, a screened porch, a basement or a hot utility room. A cabinet rated only for a narrower band is the wrong choice for a garage that reaches the high 90s in summer, and the symptom looks like a fault when it is really a mismatch. If your refrigerator seems to run all day in July, check the class on the rating plate before you assume a part has failed. Our guide to a Liebherr fridge that is not cooling covers the checks that come next.

How loud is a quiet Liebherr, and what does the dB number mean?

The sound level on a data sheet is a measured noise rating in A-weighted decibels, written as dB or dB(A). A-weighting gives more weight to the frequencies the human ear notices most, so the number reflects what you would hear rather than what a microphone would pick up. Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, a difference of ten points sounds roughly twice as loud, so a unit rated in the low 30s is far quieter than one rated in the mid 40s.

Two cautions apply. The rating is measured in a test room, not in your kitchen, so hard floors, tile walls and an open floor plan make any cabinet sound louder. And the number describes normal running, not the extra work of SuperFrost or SuperCool, when the compressor and fans run harder for a while. If a fridge is much louder than its rating suggests, read our guide to Liebherr fridge noises to separate ordinary sounds from the ones that need attention.

What is the difference between gross and net volume?

Gross volume is the total space inside the cabinet shell. Net volume is the space you can actually fill after the shelves, drawers, fans, ducts and door bins are accounted for. Data sheets give both, and the net figure is the honest one. Two refrigerators with the same outside dimensions can have very different net volumes if one carries thick insulation, a large BioFresh drawer assembly or an ice maker module.

Liebherr lists capacity in metric units on many European data sheets. Convert the figure to cubic feet before you compare it with a US appliance, and compare net with net. When the fresh food, BioFresh and freezer sections are listed separately, add them only if you know all three apply to your use, because a household that never uses a freezer drawer gains nothing from its volume.

What do freezing capacity and holdover time tell you?

Freezing capacity is the amount of fresh food, in pounds, the freezer can bring all the way down to freezing temperature in 24 hours. It matters if you buy in bulk, freeze a harvest or cook in batches. It is not the same as the total amount the freezer holds, which is the net volume. A freezer can hold a great deal and still be slow to freeze a large load, so check both figures if you freeze a lot at once.

Holdover time, sometimes called storage time in a power failure, is the number of hours the freezer stays cold enough for food after the power goes out with the door kept closed. It is measured with a particular load and room temperature, so treat it as a guide rather than a promise. Our guide to freezer food during a power cut explains what to do while you wait, and the number on the sheet is the reason the door should stay shut.

What do BioFresh and the other feature terms mean on the sheet?

Feature names appear in the list of equipment rather than the technical table. BioFresh refers to the compartments that run near freezing with controlled humidity; our BioFresh glossary entry explains the details. NoFrost describes a freezer that keeps the air dry so ice does not build up, which our NoFrost entry covers. SuperFrost is the fast-freeze function for new loads. IceMaker means an ice making module is fitted, and on some models it needs a water connection. A feature the sheet lists is a feature that model should have, so a mismatch between the sheet and the cabinet is worth a call.

What does the refrigerant line mean, and is it a safety issue?

The refrigerant line names the gas circulating in the sealed system. Many Liebherr models list R600a, which is isobutane, a natural refrigerant used in very small amounts in household cabinets. Isobutane is flammable, which is why the sealed system must never be punctured, cut or heated, and why a refrigerant leak is a technician’s job rather than a do-it-yourself repair. If you smell gas near the cabinet or hear hissing from the back, move away from any flame or spark, ventilate the room and call a technician.

The line also tells you what a replacement or recharge involves, which matters when you weigh a repair against a new unit. Our repair or replace guide for Liebherr fridges uses these facts to explain when the sealed system is the deciding factor.

Frequently asked questions
What climate class is best for a Liebherr refrigerator in a garage?
Choose a class rated for the highest room temperature the space reaches. In a garage that gets hot in summer, a cabinet rated only for a cooler room may run constantly and fail to hold its temperature. Check the class on the rating plate and on the data sheet before you install it there.
Is a Liebherr refrigerator loud?
Most are quiet, and the data sheet gives a sound rating in decibels. Real kitchens sound louder than test rooms, and the fans and compressor run harder during fast cooling, so a short burst of noise after loading groceries is normal.
Where do I find the specifications for my exact model?
Start with the full model string on the rating plate, then look up the data sheet for that string. The model number decoder explains how to read the letters and digits.
Can a hot room really make a Liebherr fridge look broken?
Yes. A cabinet in a room hotter than its climate class allows can run all day and still read warm. Move it, cool the room or choose a higher class before you replace parts, and book a visit if the fridge still struggles in a normal room.
