A new Liebherr fridge not starting is almost always a setup issue rather than a defect: the cabinet has not stood upright long enough, the outlet is dead or shared with another load, the display is waiting to be switched on, or the cabinet is simply working normally and has not reached temperature yet. This guide walks through the first start-up in the right order, so you can tell a quiet new refrigerator from one that really needs attention.

Before powerStand upright, remove all packaging, level the cabinet, check clearances
PowerGrounded wall outlet on its own circuit if possible, no extension cord
Wait before switching onThe rest period in your manual, so the oil in the compressor settles
First daySet temperatures once, keep the door closed, load food after it is cold
Normal at startRunning almost constantly, humming, gurgling and a warm side wall
Not normalA dark display after the wait, a tripped breaker or a burning smell

What should you do before you plug in a new Liebherr refrigerator?

Do the preparation before the plug goes in. Remove every strip of tape, foam block and protective film from inside and outside the cabinet, including the film on the shelves and drawers. Wipe the interior with a cloth and warm water so the factory smell does not transfer to food. Check that the cabinet is level, because a cabinet that rocks stresses the door seals and the hinges. Adjust the feet until the cabinet sits firmly and the doors close on their own from a slightly open position. The clearances for the sides, back and top are in your installation sheet, and our guide to clearances explains why a boxed-in cabinet runs hotter.

If the door needs to open the other way, do it before you move the unit into place; our guide on reversing a Liebherr fridge door shows the steps.

How long should a new Liebherr stand before you switch it on?

Leave it upright for the period stated in your manual. During transport the cabinet may have tilted, and the oil in the compressor can move into places it should not be. Switching on too early is one of the most common causes of a new fridge that starts noisily, trips a breaker or never cools properly. If the cabinet was delivered lying down, which should not happen, tell the delivery company and wait longer than the manual asks.

The wait also lets the cabinet reach room temperature. A refrigerator carried in from a cold truck in winter, or from a hot one in summer, needs to equalize before it starts, so give it time even if the manual does not insist.

Why will a new Liebherr fridge not start?

Work through these causes in order, and stop when the fridge starts:

  • The outlet is dead. Plug in a lamp or phone charger to test it. A tripped GFCI outlet or a switched outlet is a frequent cause in kitchens and garages.
  • The cabinet is switched off. Many Liebherr models have an on and off setting in the display, so a dark display can mean standby rather than a fault. Your manual shows how to switch it on.
  • The plug is not fully seated. A plug pushed in at an angle behind a cabinet can look connected and not make contact.
  • An extension cord or power strip is in the way. A refrigerator should have its own wall outlet, because a long thin cord can drop voltage at start-up.
  • The cabinet is in a demonstration or showroom setting. Some units ship with a mode that shows the display but keeps the cooling off. Your manual explains how to leave it.

If the display is lit, the fan sounds like it is turning, and the fridge is warm after an hour, the cabinet is probably starting normally. Give it time before assuming a fault.

What is normal in the first 24 hours?

A new refrigerator works hard. The compressor may run almost constantly while the cabinet pulls down from room temperature, and it is common for the side walls to feel warm, because they carry heat away from the sealed system. You may hear humming, a soft click when the compressor starts and stops, and gurgling as the refrigerant moves. None of these sounds is a fault. A new unit with a NoFrost freezer may also run its fan more than you expect while it dries the cabinet air.

What is not normal is a hot smell, a sharp rattle that does not stop, water on the floor or a breaker that trips each time the compressor starts. Switch the cabinet off at the wall and call a technician for any of those. Our guide to display symbols helps you read what the panel is telling you.

How should you set the temperatures on day one?

Set each compartment once, at the starting point in your manual, and then leave it alone for a full day. Changing the setting every few hours confuses the control and sends you down a path of false problems. If the cabinet has a BioFresh compartment or a separate freezer, set each one separately. Our temperature settings guide lists sensible starting points. Once the cabinet is cold, load the food in stages instead of filling every shelf at once, because a large warm load slows the pull-down and can trigger a temperature alarm.

If the model has SmartDevice connectivity, wait until the cabinet is running normally before you pair it; our SmartDevice Wi-Fi setup guide covers the steps. A door alarm that sounds on the first day usually means the door is not quite closing, and our door alarm guide explains what to check.

When should you call a technician?

Call if the cabinet does not start after the outlet, the plug and the on setting have been checked, if the display stays dark, if the fridge runs but has not cooled after a full day, or if you notice a burning smell, repeated breaker trips or sparks. A new appliance is the one most likely to have a transport or installation fault, so report it early. Frequently asked questions
Why is my new Liebherr fridge not cooling after a few hours?
It usually needs more time. A new cabinet can take many hours to reach its set temperature, especially if it was warm when switched on. If it is still warm after a full day, check the setting, the door seals and the clearances, then call a technician.
Do I need to wait before plugging in a new Liebherr?
Yes. Leave it upright for the rest period stated in your manual so the compressor oil settles. If you are unsure how long to wait, a longer rest is safer than a shorter one.
Can I use an extension cord for a new refrigerator?
It is better not to. Use a grounded wall outlet, ideally one that is not shared with a heavy appliance, because a thin cord can cause voltage drop and a tripped breaker.
What if the display lights up but the fridge feels warm?
Give it time, since the display comes on right away and the cooling takes hours. If it stays warm after a full day, book a visit so a technician can check the cabinet.
