Here is how to move a Liebherr refrigerator safely. Empty it, secure the doors and loose parts, keep it upright whenever you can, measure the whole route before you lift, and use a hand truck with two people. Afterward, set it level and wait as long as the manual says before you switch it on, because the oil in the compressor needs time to settle after transport. Water lines, built-in niches and anything attached to the wall are a technician’s or installer’s job.
How do you prepare a Liebherr refrigerator for a move?
Start with the food. Plan to empty the cabinet completely, and use coolers for what you need to keep cold. Check our guide to keeping freezer food during a power cut for the habits that protect food when the appliance is off: keep doors closed as long as you can and pack tightly. Move the most perishable items last and put them in the new location first.
Then deal with the loose parts. Shelves, drawers and door bins can shift and crack in transit, so either take them out and wrap them or fix them in place according to the manual. Glass shelves are the most fragile, and our guide to Liebherr refrigerator shelves shows how to lift them out safely. Wipe the interior and leave the doors ajar if the cabinet will be stored for a while, so the inside dries. Whether to switch the appliance off a long time before the move is a model question; the owner’s manual describes it.
How do you secure the doors and protect the finish?
A door that swings open on a truck or on a hand truck can tear off a hinge or injure a person. Hold the doors closed with tape or strapping that will not leave residue on the finish, and put a soft layer, such as a moving blanket or cardboard, between the strap and the surface. Do not wrap tape across glass, a display or a handle you will need to grip later. Padding the corners and the front edge saves the finish from scratches.
If the doors are heavy or the cabinet is a column, do not remove them yourself. Taking a door off a heavy appliance, especially one with a glass or integrated panel, risks dropping it, and the work of rehanging it matters to the seal. Our guide to reversing a Liebherr fridge door shows why even a routine door job needs a helper, and that heavy and integrated doors are best left to a professional.
Can you lay a refrigerator on its side?
Avoid it. Moving a refrigerator upright is the safest approach, because the compressor’s oil stays where it belongs. If a cabinet has been tilted or laid on its side, the oil may move into places it should not be, and switching on too soon can permanently damage a compressor. Our installation guide notes that skipping the settling time is one of the few installation mistakes that can permanently damage a machine. Check the manual for the time it specifies and for whether your model may be tilted at all. If there is no way around a tilt, use the minimum and tell the installer so the settling time is respected.

How do you move it without hurting yourself or the floor?
Measure first. Walk the route from the current spot to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the new one, and measure the doorways, the turns in hallways, the steps and the elevator if there is one, then compare the numbers with the cabinet’s width, depth and height, including the handle. Tall refrigerators are heavier and less forgiving than they look. A unit that will not make a corner has to go back, so know before you lift.
Use a hand truck rated for appliances, with straps, and two people. Tilt only as far as the manual allows, keep your back straight and let the equipment take the weight. Protect the floor with cardboard or a sliding mat. Never pull the appliance by the door handle, and do not push it by the top, because it can tip. If a staircase is involved, hire movers who handle appliances. If the cabinet is stuck in a niche, do not force it; a built-in unit may be fixed to the cabinetry and needs an installer.
What about water lines and built-in units?
A refrigerator with an ice maker or a filtered water supply has a connection to the household water. Shut off the supply and have the line disconnected and reconnected by a plumber or technician, because a loose fitting can leak for days behind a cabinet. Our guide to Liebherr water filter replacement shows where the filter sits on models that have one. A built-in or column unit is a heavier job, and our Monolith column installation guide describes why the niche and the fixings matter.
What should you do after the move?
Stand the cabinet upright and leave it for the time the manual specifies before you plug it in. Then set it level, using the feet, and check that a door left ajar swings shut and that the seal grips. Switch it on and run it empty until it reaches temperature before loading it. Load it in stages rather than filling it with warm food at once. Check the display for any code and note it. If it does not get cold or the display shows a fault, see our not-cooling guide before assuming the move damaged it. Keep the manual’s settling note somewhere safe for next time.
