TL;DR: A Liebherr fridge freezing food usually means the setpoint is too low, SuperCool is still on, or food sits against the cold air outlet. Raise the temperature a step, move items away from the vents and wait a day.

A Liebherr fridge freezing food, with lettuce going glassy and drinks turning to slush on the back shelf, almost always means the fridge compartment is running colder than you intended, or that cold air is blowing straight onto the food. The fix is usually simple: raise the set temperature by a degree or two, move delicate items away from the cold air outlet, check that nothing blocks the vents, and wait a day to see the effect before changing anything else.

Common causeFridge setpoint too low, or a boost function left on
Second causeFood pressed against the rear wall or the air outlet

Why is my Liebherr fridge freezing food?

A fridge compartment should hold food a few degrees above freezing. When food freezes there, one of three things is happening. The first is the setpoint: the temperature may have been set too low, possibly by a child, a cleaning cloth brushing the display or a previous owner. The second is the airflow: Liebherr refrigerators with NoFrost or fan-driven cooling blow cold air into the compartment, and food placed directly in front of the outlet freezes while food on the other side stays fine. The third is a fault in the part that tells the cooling system what to do.

Start with what you can see. Look at the display and read the set temperature. Open the door and look for ice crystals on the back wall, on the vegetables and on the food closest to it. If only items touching the rear wall are frozen, the cause is likely placement, not a fault.

Is SuperCool still switched on?

SuperCool is a boost function that chills the fridge hard for a few hours, for example after a large grocery shop. If it stays on, or if it is switched on again and again, the fridge will run colder than the setpoint and freeze delicate items. On many models the display shows an indicator when it is active. Switch it off and wait. Our SuperCool guide explains how the function works and how long it normally runs. If the function switches itself back on, check that nobody is pressing the button when they wipe the panel.

How should you set the temperature?

Raise the fridge setpoint by one degree or one step and leave it alone for a full day. The display shows the target, and the interior takes many hours to follow. Changing the setting several times in a row confuses the result and can leave you chasing the problem. Check the manual for the suggested range for the fridge compartment, and use our temperature settings guide if you want a reference. If the cabinet has BioFresh drawers, remember that they run colder than the main compartment by design, so food in them will be close to freezing without being damaged, as described in our guide to how BioFresh works.

Is the food placed too close to the cold air outlet?

On cabinets with fan cooling, the coldest air comes out of vents at the back or the top of the compartment. Salad, berries, eggs, milk cartons and bottles of water freeze first when placed in front of those vents. Move them to the door or to a lower shelf, and leave a hand’s width of space between the food and the rear wall. Do not cover the vents with containers or foil. A packed shelf also blocks the airflow, which can cause uneven cooling with a mixture of freezing and warm spots.

When is it a fault?

If the food keeps freezing after you have raised the setpoint, switched off SuperCool and cleared the vents, a fault is possible. The usual suspects are a temperature sensor that reads wrong, an air flap that stays open so too much cold air reaches the fridge, or a control board that no longer follows the sensor. A sensor problem may also show an alarm or a code on the display. Our refrigerator error codes guide and the page for BT sensor codes explain what those messages mean on the site. A fridge that freezes food and also feels warm at times may be cycling oddly, and a technician can test the sensor and the flap directly.

What should you do with food that has frozen?

Most frozen vegetables and fruit are safe but will be soft and watery when thawed. Dairy and eggs that have frozen can change texture, and eggs in the shell may crack. Use the affected food soon and do not refreeze items that have thawed completely. If the cause was a setting, you will see normal results within a day or two of correcting it. Keep an eye on the fridge for a week afterward, and write down the setpoint you used so you can return to it. If you are unsure, our refrigerator repair page describes how a visit works.

How can you prevent it from happening again?

Write the setpoint on a note inside a cabinet door after you find the right value, so anyone who changes it can restore it. Keep the display panel clean and dry, because a damp cloth pressing the buttons can change settings without anyone noticing. Load the fridge loosely, keep delicate food in the middle of the compartment and check the temperature once a week for the first month. A small habit like this catches a drifting setting before it costs you a shelf of produce.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Liebherr fridge freezing lettuce?
Usually the fridge is set too cold, or the lettuce sits against the rear wall or in front of a cold air outlet. Raise the temperature by a step and move delicate items away from the vents.
Can SuperCool cause freezing in the fridge?
Yes. SuperCool chills the fridge hard for a short time, and food can freeze if the function stays on or is repeated. Switch it off when the food has cooled.
Is it safe to keep using the fridge while food is freezing?
Yes in the short term, but move delicate food away from the cold spots. If the problem continues after you adjust the setting, book a technician.
When should I call a technician?
Call when freezing continues after adjustments, when the display shows a sensor alarm, or when the fridge cycles oddly. You can book a visit online.
